Buffalo Park (also called the Buffalo Core Area)

Buffalo Park is located on the eastern side of the Okavango River in Namibia’s Kavango Region. It covers an area of 629 square kilometers and forms part of the larger Bwabwata National Park, which was established in 2007. Though not as well-known as other parks, Buffalo is a hidden gem when it comes to wildlife viewing in Namibia.

Buffalo Core Area – A Hidden Gem Among Namibia’s Game Parks

If you're coming from Divundu, you'll reach the park about 10 kilometers after crossing the Okavango Bridge on the Trans-Caprivi Highway. Look out for a sign marked “Buffalo” on your right.

This park is home to an impressive variety of animals. You'll likely see large groups of elephants and buffalo, as well as rare sightings of roan and sable antelope—species that are a special highlight here. Other animals you may encounter include warthogs, kudu, impala, reedbuck, red lechwe, hippos, and crocodiles. Lions and leopards are also known to pass through the area.

Many animals, including elephants, buffalo, zebras, and wildebeest, follow seasonal migration patterns. In the dry season, they stay near the river, and in the wet season, they move further inland. This migration helps preserve the landscape by giving the plant life time to recover. When the larger animals head inland, predators often stay near the river, making them easier to spot.

Part of Buffalo Park lies in the remains of an old South African army base. These ruins are now a peaceful resting spot for animals like impalas and kudus. In some areas, it’s allowed to get out of your vehicle and climb the large termite mounds along the river. These give you fantastic views and photo opportunities—but always be cautious. Don’t get too close to lions, elephants, or crocodiles, as they might not appreciate your visit.

Just across the river, you can see the Mahango Game Reserve, offering even more wildlife adventures.
