Etosha Region, Namibia
The Etosha Region is best known for the world-famous Etosha National Park, but it also includes areas to the south around Outjo and stretches east and west beyond the park. Etosha is one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations, offering visitors the chance to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitat.
Climate in the Etosha Region
Like most of Namibia, this region has a dry and a rainy season. From April to September, it rarely rains, so animals gather around waterholes — both natural and man-made — often forming large groups in specific parts of the park. When the rainy season arrives, the wildlife spreads out again into the more remote areas.
Plants and Animals of Etosha
Etosha and its surroundings are divided into eight main types of landscapes. At the center lies the giant Etosha Salt Pan, a wide, flat space with little to no vegetation. Around it, you’ll find grasslands, shrub savannas, mopane forests, thorn bush areas, mixed woodlands, and even rocky hills.
The region is home to a wide range of animals, including elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, springboks, black-faced impalas, elands, and warthogs. It’s also rich in birdlife and reptiles, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
