Khwe Living Museum

The Khwe Living Museum is a unique place where visitors can learn about the traditional way of life of the San people, also known as the Khwe. It offers a real, hands-on experience of their ancient hunter-gatherer culture, including traditional songs, dances, and stories passed down through generations.

Located just 10 kilometers east of Divundu and near the Buffalo Core Area, the museum is surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife. Many of the activities here are interactive, letting visitors do more than just watch. You can try making arrows, crafting bracelets from papyrus, or join a short walk through the bush, where it’s common to spot antelope and other wild animals. During the walk, the Khwe share their tracking skills and explain how they set traps and find food in the wild.

The museum is run by the Khwe community themselves, so all the money earned goes directly to supporting them. This project not only helps keep their culture alive but also provides a steady source of income for the people involved.

Programs at the Khwe Living Museum:

  • Traditional Life and Culture:
See how the Khwe lived in the past. Learn how they made clothing, baskets, jewelry, and mats. Watch how they started fire the traditional way and hear their songs. You’ll also witness how the village healer treats a patient using traditional methods.

  • Bush Walk Experience:
After a short ritual at the shrine for good luck, guests follow a Khwe hunter into the bush. Learn how they track animals, set traps, and collect wild food. You’ll also visit the village blacksmith, who shows how arrows and spears are made.

  • Visit to the Modern Village:
Besides the traditional village, guests are welcome to see how the Khwe live today. This gives a fuller picture of how they balance old traditions with modern life.
