NamibRand Nature Reserve
NamibRand Nature Reserve is one of southern Africa’s largest private conservation areas, located in southwestern Namibia. Covering over 215,000 hectares, the reserve was established in 1984 by Namibian businessman Albi Brückner. He transformed several former livestock farms into a vast, protected wilderness area to help preserve the unique ecology of the Namib Desert and promote sustainable tourism.
The reserve borders the Namib-Naukluft Park to the west and shares a fenceless boundary with it, allowing free movement of wildlife. NamibRand is known for its stunning desert landscapes—endless red sand dunes, gravel plains, rocky outcrops, and towering mountains. It is home to oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, bat-eared foxes, and many bird species, including raptors.
NamibRand is also a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the clearest and darkest night skies on Earth—perfect for stargazing. With a strong focus on low-impact ecotourism and conservation, NamibRand sets an example of how private land can contribute to national and global environmental goals.
