Olive Trail

Hiking in the Naukluft Mountains

The Olive Trail is one of the most scenic and adventurous hiking routes in Namibia, located within the Naukluft section of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This 10 km circular trail offers a rewarding mix of mountain terrain, deep gorges, high plateaus, and breathtaking desert views. The trail is considered moderately challenging and typically takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete, making it ideal for fit and experienced hikers looking for an immersive desert trekking experience.

Starting Point of the Olive Trail

The Olive Trail begins at the Naukluft Campsite, which is the main access point for hiking in this part of the park. From the parking area, the trail starts with a steep uphill climb, gaining about 300–400 meters in elevation to reach the top of the plateau. Hikers are immediately rewarded with panoramic views of the rugged Naukluft landscape before the trail descends into a narrow gorge and continues through diverse desert terrain.

Wildlife Observation in the Naukluft

The Naukluft Mountains are known for their unique ecosystem, and hikers on the Olive Trail may encounter a variety of desert-adapted wildlife. Common sightings include Hartmann’s mountain zebras, kudus, baboons, klipspringers, and rock hyraxes (dassies). Birdwatchers can also enjoy spotting raptors such as Verreaux's eagles and other birds of prey that soar above the cliffs and ridges. The quiet and remote nature of the trail makes it a great place for nature observation.

Required Equipment for the Hike

Hiking boots with good grip are essential, 2 liters of water, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses,  lightweight backpack with snacks, a trail map, and a first aid kit is also recommended.
