Epupa Falls
Epupa Falls is a breathtaking waterfall where the Kunene River, which forms the border between Namibia and Angola, plunges 40 meters into a rocky gorge. Located near the village of Epupa, the name “Epupa” means “falling water” in the Herero language. The Kunene is one of the few permanent rivers in Namibia, though its flow depends on seasonal rainfall, making the falls especially impressive during April and May.
The surrounding Kunene Region is extremely dry, so the risk of malaria is very low. However, the river is home to dangerous crocodiles—swimming is strongly discouraged.
To reach Epupa Falls, travel north from Opuwo on the C43 road. Since the village of Epupa offers limited supplies, it’s best to refuel and stock up on food and water in Opuwo before continuing your journey.
For experienced 4x4 drivers, the challenging river route between Epupa and Swartbooisdrift offers a true off-road adventure. This 90-kilometer stretch can take a full day to complete, with parts of the trail requiring manual effort to clear or navigate—perfect for thrill-seekers looking for a rugged driving experience.
