Kolmanskop – Ghost Town in the Namib Desert
Kolmanskop is a ghost town located in the Namib Desert, about 10 kilometers east of Lüderitz in southern Namibia. It sits within the Sperrgebiet (Forbidden Zone), a highly restricted area that was once at the heart of Namibia’s diamond mining industry.
History of Kolmanskop
Kolmanskop’s story began in 1908, during the era of German colonial rule, when a railway worker named Zacharias Lewala stumbled upon a shiny stone while clearing tracks nearby. He handed the stone to his supervisor, who confirmed it was a diamond. This discovery triggered a diamond rush, and within a few years, Kolmanskop blossomed into a thriving mining settlement.
The German miners built the town in a grand European style, complete with elegant homes, a hospital, a school, a power station, an ice factory, a bowling alley, and even the first X-ray machine in the southern hemisphere. It also boasted a casino, a theatre, and a tram system—luxuries unheard of in such a harsh desert environment. The wealth from diamonds flowed abundantly, and Kolmanskop quickly became one of the richest towns in Africa.
However, by the 1920s, diamond resources in the area began to dwindle, and richer deposits were discovered further south near Oranjemund. Mining operations and residents gradually moved away, and by 1956, Kolmanskop was completely abandoned. The desert slowly reclaimed the town, with sand pouring into empty rooms and buildings collapsing over time, leaving behind an eerie and haunting shell of its former glory.
Kolmanskop Today
Kolmanskop is now a top historical attraction in Namibia, drawing photographers, historians, and curious travelers from around the world. The abandoned buildings, partly buried in sand dunes, create surreal and hauntingly beautiful scenes that capture the imagination.
Guided tours are offered daily from Lüderitz and typically take place in the mornings—usually between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM—before the desert heat becomes too intense. Visitors can explore several preserved buildings, learn about the town’s history, and experience firsthand the ghostly silence of this once-flourishing settlement. A photography permit is also available for those wishing to return later in the day to capture the golden light of sunset on the sand-filled ruins.
