Life at the Mafwe Living Museum
Located approximately 20 km north of Kongola in Namibia’s Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip), the Mafwe Living Museum offers a unique and immersive cultural experience. Since its establishment in 2008, in partnership with the Living Culture Foundation Namibia, the museum has served as a living archive of Mafwe heritage and traditional life.
Step Into the World of the Mafwe People
This open-air museum is a window into the authentic lifestyle of the Mafwe community, showcasing how they lived in pre-colonial times. Visitors are guided through the village, where Mafwe men and women share stories, crafts, and daily customs passed down for generations. A local interpreter is always available to translate into English, ensuring you don’t miss a detail.
What sets this museum apart is its interactive nature. Guests are invited to join in—try your hand at traditional fishing techniques, net weaving, fire-making, or even taste indigenous foods. These hands-on activities are both educational and fun, often leading to laughter and lively conversations between locals and visitors.
Stay Under the Stars at Baobab Campsite
Extend your cultural adventure by spending the night at the nearby Baobab Campsite, a rustic bush camp tucked beneath towering baobab trees. Fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush—chirping insects, rustling leaves, and distant animal calls. While the campsite offers basic amenities, its charm lies in its natural surroundings and tranquility.
If camping isn’t your style, there are several comfortable lodges and guesthouses within the Caprivi region, just a short drive away.
Why Visit the Mafwe Living Museum?
The Mafwe Living Museum is more than a tourist stop—it's a cultural bridge that connects you to Namibia's rich traditions in a respectful and engaging way. Whether you're curious about African village life, interested in local crafts, or simply looking for a meaningful travel experience, this museum delivers a heartfelt and genuine encounter with the Mafwe heritage.
