Gateway to Northern Namibia

The Waterberg region, which includes the towns of Otjiwarongo and Hochfeld, lies on the main route from Windhoek to northern Namibia and Etosha National Park. At the heart of this area stands the majestic Waterberg Mountain, a striking flat-topped formation known for its geological and historical significance. Surrounding the mountain is the Waterberg Plateau Park, a protected conservation area. Many nearby farms rely on cattle farming, while others operate as guest lodges and hunting farms.

Climate of the Waterberg Region

Compared to most of Namibia, the Waterberg area receives relatively high rainfall—around 400 mm annually. Rainwater seeps into the sandstone of the mountain and eventually flows out through natural springs, supported by impermeable clay layers beneath the surface.

Flora and Fauna of the Waterberg

Thanks to its abundant water sources, the Waterberg region boasts rich plant life and vibrant wildlife. On the plateau itself, visitors may encounter rhinos, buffaloes, roan antelope, giraffes, baboons, and Damara dik-diks, among other species. The combination of lush vegetation and conservation efforts makes it a haven for biodiversity.
