The Kavango Region

The Kavango Region, located in northeastern Namibia, is now divided into two parts: Kavango East and Kavango West. The area gets its name and character from the Okavango River, a powerful river that starts in Angola and flows down into Botswana, eventually reaching the famous Okavango Delta.

The people who live along the river are known as the Kavango, made up of five different cultural groups. Rundu, the main town in the region and Namibia’s second-largest town, is located in the center and is home to over 60,000 people.

Weather and Climate

The Kavango Region receives a lot more rain than most parts of Namibia—between 500 and 600 millimeters each year. However, in the sandy areas south of the river, the water drains away quickly, so there’s not much surface water. Summers can be extremely hot.

Nature and Wildlife

This region is rich in plant and animal life, especially in the national parks near the Okavango River. You’ll find lush floodplains, thick woodlands, and massive baobab trees. The wildlife is diverse and includes elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and water-loving antelopes like reedbuck and lechwe. The river is also home to crocodiles and hippos.

Top Attractions in the Kavango Region

Visit Mahango National Park and the lesser-known Buffalo Park for great wildlife viewing. Stop by Rundu to explore the town and stock up on supplies. Don’t miss the Living Museum of the Mbunza to learn about Kavango culture.
The region offers rich nature, culture, and local experiences. Perfect for travelers seeking both adventure and authenticity.
